Most vehicles can be donated without the title

Not having a title is the #1 reason people assume they can’t donate their car. In reality, many vehicles — especially those going to scrap — can be picked up without a title at all. In other situations, we can often accept the vehicle with some additional documentation. Just tell us your situation and we’ll let you know what’s possible.

How to start Fill out our online donation form. When you reach the title question, select “I don’t have the title” and briefly explain why — lost, never received it, it’s in someone else’s name, or whatever the situation is. We’ll take it from there.

Common situations — and what happens next

Here are the situations donors most often write to us about. In nearly all of them, we can still proceed with the donation:

You lost or misplaced the title

In many cases we can still pick up the vehicle — especially for older vehicles going to scrap. If we need a duplicate title for your specific situation, we’ll email you with the steps to apply through your state DMV.

You never received a title when you bought the car

This happens more often than you’d think. The seller was supposed to sign the title over to you but never did. Tell us the situation when you submit your donation. In many cases we can still pick up the vehicle, or we’ll advise on the simplest path forward.

The title is in someone else’s name

Maybe you’re donating a car for an elderly parent, a deceased relative, or the previous owner simply never signed it over. We handle these situations regularly. Most can be resolved with additional documentation at pickup — sometimes a Power of Attorney, sometimes just being present. Submit the donation and we’ll advise.

Special situations For donating a deceased person’s car, donating an inherited vehicle, donating a car with a lien, or donating an abandoned vehicle on your property, we have separate guides with more specific information.

How it works when you don’t have a title

1

Start your donation online

Fill out our donation form. When asked about the title, indicate you don’t have one and briefly describe the situation in the comments. Takes about 2 minutes.

2

We evaluate and let you know what’s needed

Usually within a business day, we’ll confirm whether we can pick up the vehicle as-is, or let you know what additional documentation is needed — often something simple you can provide at pickup.

3

Free pickup scheduled

When we can pick up your vehicle, you’ll get a scheduling text — usually within hours. Same-day or next-day pickup is typical. In most cases you just need to be present at pickup to sign a document.

4

If a duplicate title is needed

For the situations where we do need the title, we’ll email you the steps to apply for a duplicate through your state DMV. Once you have it, we schedule pickup.

5

You get your tax receipt

You receive an IRS tax receipt confirming your donation. Your deduction depends on the vehicle’s sale price — see our tax deduction guide for details.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases yes — especially if the vehicle is going to scrap. Start the donation online and describe your situation. We’ll confirm whether we can pick it up as-is or walk you through applying for a duplicate title.
Often yes. This is a common situation — donating for an elderly parent, a car whose previous owner never signed it over, etc. Submit the donation online and tell us the situation in the comments. In many cases we can handle it with additional paperwork at pickup, such as a Power of Attorney.
No — when a duplicate title is needed, it has to be applied for by the registered owner. But we’ll send you clear, state-specific guidance so the process is straightforward, and we’re available by phone 24/7 if you have questions along the way.
Duplicate title fees vary by state — from as low as $2 in some states to nearly $100 in others. The fee is paid by the donor to the state DMV. See our state-by-state guide for your state’s specific cost and process.
Abandoned vehicles have a separate process, since we need to establish ownership first. See our guide to donating an abandoned vehicle for details.
Liens have their own process — sometimes resolvable faster than donors expect, especially for wrecked vehicles. See our guide to donating a car with a lien for details.
Yes. As long as the donation is legally completed, you’ll receive an IRS tax receipt for your deduction, regardless of whether a title was required at pickup. See our tax deduction guide for how the deduction amount is calculated.
