Donate a Totaled Car to Charity
Totaled by insurance, wrecked in an accident, or damaged beyond repair? We accept it. Free towing, tax deductible, and better than a junkyard.
We accept totaled cars — here’s what you need to know
If your car has been in an accident, declared a total loss by insurance, or is otherwise severely damaged, you can still donate it. In fact, donating a totaled car is often a better outcome than selling it to a junkyard — you get a tax deduction, free towing, and the satisfaction of knowing the proceeds support a worthy cause.
What “totaled” actually means for donation
A vehicle is typically declared “totaled” when the cost to repair it exceeds its market value. But totaled doesn’t mean worthless — it means the insurance company didn’t want to pay for repairs. The vehicle still has salvage value, which is what funds your tax deduction.
What we can accept
- Cars declared a total loss by an insurance company
- Vehicles with major collision damage (frame damage, airbag deployment, flood damage)
- Cars that have been sitting for years and are no longer operable
- Vehicles with major mechanical failures (blown engine, seized transmission)
- Fire-damaged vehicles with a title
- Hail-damaged vehicles
What we generally cannot accept
- Bare shells with no engine, no interior, and no drivetrain components
- Vehicles missing all four wheels and tires
- Vehicles that have been stripped of all valuable parts to the point where towing cost exceeds salvage value
The insurance total loss title (salvage title)
When an insurance company totals a vehicle, they typically take ownership of it and issue a salvage title. If you kept the vehicle after the insurance payout (by buying it back from the insurance company), you likely have a salvage title.
We accept salvage titles. The process is the same as donating any other vehicle — sign and print your name on the title, hand it to the tow driver, and we handle the rest.
If the insurance company took the title and you no longer have it, call us — depending on the situation there may be options for getting documentation to proceed.
Donating vs. junking a totaled car
Many people with totaled cars assume a junkyard is their only option. Here’s why donation is often the better choice:
Tax deduction vs. cash
A junkyard pays you cash — often $100–$500 for a totaled vehicle. A donation gives you a tax deduction equal to the sale price of the vehicle at auction, which may be comparable or higher, and is tax-deductible if you itemize.
Free towing either way
Both junkyards and donation programs offer free towing for totaled vehicles. With us, pickup is always free regardless of condition or location.
Charitable impact
100% of net proceeds from your donated vehicle go to Activated Ministries, supporting scholarships, orphanages, and disaster relief — instead of lining a junkyard owner’s pocket.
