A salvage title means the vehicle was declared a total loss by an insurance company at some point — typically due to an accident, flood, fire, or theft recovery. Many donors assume a salvage title disqualifies them from donating, but that’s not the case. We accept salvage title vehicles just like any other donation.

What is a salvage title?

When an insurer declares a vehicle a total loss, they apply for a salvage title in the state where the vehicle is registered. This flags the vehicle’s history in the title record. If you bought the vehicle back from the insurance company after it was totaled, or purchased a salvage vehicle, you received a salvage title.

Some states issue a rebuilt or reconstructed title if the vehicle was repaired after receiving a salvage title and passed a state inspection. We accept rebuilt titles as well.

Salvage and rebuilt vehicles are typically worth less on the open market than clean-title vehicles, but they still have real salvage or parts value — which forms the basis of your tax deduction.

Sign and print your name in the seller/transferor section of the salvage title, exactly as your name appears on the front. The process is identical to signing a regular title.

We arrange a licensed tow truck to your location at no charge — same or next day in most areas. The driver will collect the signed salvage title at pickup.

Tax receipt

You receive IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the vehicle being sold at auction, documenting the sale price for your tax deduction.

It can affect the auction value (and thus your deduction), since salvage-titled vehicles sell for less than equivalent clean-title vehicles even when running. But it doesn’t affect your ability to donate — we’ll accept it regardless.
