Where to sign South Dakota title

South Dakota Title Processing

I'VE GOT THE TITLE IN FRONT OF ME, NOW WHERE DO I SIGN?

You release ownership by signing 15, section 2, on the back of the title.

If the owner has the title, have them sign off as the seller. Exchange the payment for the correctly signed documents and the vehicle's keys. Make sure to check for any unsigned liens on the title and obtain a proper lien release, if applicable.

I'm the registered owner but I can't find my title:

The registered owner of the vehicle can apply for a duplicate title if the current one has been lost, stolen, mutilated, countered or has become illegible. The Application for a Duplicate Certificate of Title can be found here. You will need a notarized generic Powers of Attorney signed by all owners listed on the title (a copy is used to apply for the duplicate title and the original is used to sign the duplicate title when it is received from the DMV).

It is good to keep in mind that in order to sell a vehicle, be it salvage, clear or other you need to have a negotiable title because there is no prescribed method of selling a vehicle without one.

We can take care of the duplicate title process for you. You will need to fill out the forms below and hold onto them until the tow agent gets them.

A notarized generic Powers of Attorney signed by all owners listed on the title (a copy is used to apply for
the duplicate title and the original is used to sign the duplicate title when it is received from the DMV).

A Damage Disclosure Statement signed by all owners if the vehicle is less than 7 model years with a GVWR
of less than 16,000 lbs.

Lien Release (if applicable).

The owner of the vehicle is deceased:

In the case of no probate proceedings: You, the surviving spouse or next of kin can transfer ownership of the vehicle with an Affidavit of Vehicle Ownership by Succession, a copy of the death certificate, and a properly signed title by the surviving spouse or next of kin. This form can only be used if the deceased's estate is valued at less than $50,000 and 30 days have elapsed since their death.

In the case of a probated estate: You'll need a properly endorsed title by the appointed administrator or executor if letters of administration have been issued.

The vehicle was abandoned on my property:

We can only pick up an abandoned vehicle if we are able to obtain a signature from the last registered owner.
