I'VE GOT THE TITLE IN FRONT OF ME, NOW WHERE DO I SIGN?

I've got the title in front of me now where do I sign?:

Release ownership by signing on line 1 on the front of the title where indicated. If the vehicle is, or was financed, the lienholder’s name appears in the legal owner section and their release with counter signature is required on line 3.

In order to release liability you must surrender the plates. You can do this in person at any MVC Agency or Regional Service Center. Or, if you prefer, mail the plates to:

  • Motor Vehicle Commission
  • Customer Advocacy Agency
  • P.O. Box 403
  • Trenton, New Jersey 08666-0403

I'm the registered owner but I can't find my title:

The registered owner of the vehicle can apply for a duplicate title if the original has be countered lost stolen or mutilated beyond legibility. You will need to go to your local MVC Agency and complete an application for a duplicate title where you will encounter a $60 duplicate title fee.

Under certain circumstances the vehicle can be crushed. We require written notification on Provider letterhead requesting the vehicle be crushed.

If you would like to donate your vehicle but you lack the title and have no desire to obtain a duplicate title you can have us process the duplicate title for you. All you have to do is fill out the forms below and hold them until the tow agent comes to pickup your vehicle.

Two notarized Powers of Attorney signed by all owners listed on the title (one to apply for the duplicate title and one to sign the duplicate title when it is received from the DMV).

Copy of the vehicle registration or insurance card.

Owner’s NJ driver license number.

Lien Release (if applicable).

The owner of the vehicle is deceased:

In the case of joint ownership between spouses, Right of Survivorship is implied. If one of the spouses is deceased, we require a certified copy of the death certificate, a properly signed title by the surviving owner, and a notarized Affidavit of Surviving Spouse (CO-45)

In the case of the death of an owner with the presence of a will: You will need a Surrogate’s Short Certificate and a properly signed title by the executor of the decedent’s estate.

The vehicle was abandoned on my property:

We can only pick up an abandoned vehicle if we are able to obtain a signature from the last registered owner.
